The Townsville local government area is located within the coastal dry tropics of Queensland and experiences an unenviable combination intense erosive rainfall and year round high temperatures that when combined with typically dispersive clay-rich soils inevitably leads to significant export of bedload and suspended solids into the string of biological assets leading into the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Historically, attention and resources have been focused on effective plan preparation and policy support for effective stormwater management however results indicate that this does not always translate into environmental outcomes within catchments. Recent years have seen shift in focus to provide emphasis on empowering the field based stormwater practitioners and regulators with the training and tools required to implement effective stormwater management and complement planning foundations laid.
